As alluvial deposits and reefs then were opened up on the Ovens, Goulburn and Upper Murray Rivers, the more enduring settlements became townships and district centres. Of the total of nearly 10 million ounces (300 tonnes) of gold produced in the North-East, 70 per cent was alluvial gold. The North-East produced 12 per cent of all the gold found in Victoria.
