Gold in the North-East: by Brian Lloyd.
Begins with discovery of rich gold at Beechworth and the Woolshed in 1852, following quickly upon the outbreak of gold fever at Ballarat in 1851. The narrative is in six parts:

  • Beechworth, Stanley, Yackandandah and Eldorado.
  • The deep leads of Chiltern and Rutherglen.
  • Buckland, Myrtleford, Bright, Wandiligong and Harrietville.
  • Sluicing at Yackandandah and dredging at Eldorado, Myrtleford, Bright and Harrietville.
  • Goulburn Valley from Woods Point down to Yea.
  • Bethanga and Granya, the Mitta Mitta
  • and Upper Murray Rivers.
A story of alluvial and reef mining, and of how much gold there was and where it was mined. It commemorates the work of the miners, who stimulated the development of infrastructure and industries, and who laid much of the social and economic foundations of Victoria. As alluvial deposits and reefs then were opened up on the Ovens, Goulburn and Upper Murray Rivers, the more enduring settlements became townships and district centres. Of the total of nearly 10 million ounces (300 tonnes) of gold produced in the North-East, 70 per cent was alluvial gold. The North-East produced 12 per cent of all the gold found in Victoria.
